Land Use

There are growing tensions and growing competition over how land should be utilised, in recognition of the need to increase food production, for a growing population or to boost local i.e. Scottish food supply and improve the country’s food security. But at the same time land is required to meet targets to lower carbon emissions, tackle climate change, and address biodiversity loss for example by restoring peatlands and planting woodlands.

How can we ensure food security whilst also use land to increase biodiversity and capture carbon? We will explore these debates and present research over the coming years on how land managers are making these decisions and what motivates them to do so as part of our Scottish Land Insights project.
